Tulsa Pool Opening & Closing: A Seasonal Guide

Oklahoma's climate means your pool opening and closing windows are tighter than you think. Here's what Clearwater techs do — and what you should know.

Tulsa Pool Opening & Closing: A Seasonal Guide

Tulsa sits in an interesting climate zone for pool owners. Winters are cold but short. Springs arrive fast and warm up unpredictably. Most Tulsa pools are usable April through October — sometimes later. But getting the timing wrong on your opening or closing can mean equipment damage or a frustrating green pool at the start of swim season.

Opening: Don't Wait Until Memorial Day

The biggest mistake Tulsa pool owners make is opening too late. Algae growth accelerates dramatically once water temperatures hit 60°F — and Tulsa water can reach that in late March or April. If your pool is still covered and untreated, you're growing a problem you'll have to fight in May.

Clearwater recommends opening between early April and mid-April in most years. The water doesn't need to be swim temperature to open — it just needs to be running, filtered, and chemically balanced.

What a Professional Opening Includes

  • Remove, clean, and store the winter cover
  • Remove all winterization plugs and reinstall return fittings
  • Reinstall drain plugs in pump, filter, and heater
  • Prime and start the pump, check for leaks
  • Chemically test and balance the water
  • Shock the pool and add algaecide startup dose
  • Clean and inspect the pool surface
  • Check and adjust all equipment settings

Closing: Don't Wait Until the Water Turns Green

Closing timing in Tulsa is more flexible — most pools can stay open through October without issue. We recommend closing when consistent overnight lows drop below 50°F, which in Tulsa is usually mid-to-late October through November. The goal is to close before a hard freeze while the water is still reasonably warm and balanced.
