Most in-ground pool interiors last 10–15 years before they need resurfacing — but the range is wide. A pool with borderline chemistry for years may need work at 8. A well-maintained pool with a high-end pebble finish might go 20 years without issue. Knowing what to look for helps you plan (and budget) rather than react.
Signs Your Interior Needs Attention
- Rough texture — If the surface feels like sandpaper underfoot, the plaster has eroded. This is the most common early sign.
- Staining that won't come out — Surface staining from metals, algae, or minerals that resists treatment usually means the plaster is degraded enough to absorb the stain.
- Etching and pitting — Small craters or rough spots indicate acid etching from chronically low pH or alkalinity.
- Structural cracks — Hairline cracks are sometimes cosmetic, but cracks that follow the gunite shell underneath can indicate structural movement.
- Hollow spots (delamination) — If you tap the surface and hear a hollow sound, the plaster has separated from the shell underneath.
- Persistent algae growth — Algae loves to colonize rough, porous plaster. If your chemistry is correct and algae keeps coming back, the surface may be the issue.
What Are Your Options?
When it comes time to resurface, you have several finish options at different price points. Basic white plaster is the most affordable but has the shortest lifespan (8–10 years). Quartz aggregate finishes (like Quartzscape) offer a step up in durability and appearance at moderate cost. Pebble finishes (Pebble Tec, Pebble Sheen) are the premium tier — more expensive but 15–20 year lifespans are common with proper chemistry.
What to Expect During the Process
A typical interior resurface takes 5–7 days from drain to refill and startup. The pool is drained, the old finish is chipped or blasted off, the shell is inspected and any structural repairs are made, the new finish is applied and cured, and then the pool is refilled and carefully chemically started up over 2 weeks. Plan to be without your pool for about 3 weeks total when you factor in startup chemistry stabilization.
